Mentor Text - "Sarah" by We Three music video

The song and music video shows the life of a girl named Sarah that is struggling with mental health issues and addiction. It shows the reality of the effects of depression and what it can lead to, such as alcohol abuse and drug abuse.
I chose this music video as my mentor text because I believe there is a very important message behind it. When someone first sees this music video, they might automatically think that it is just for the audience of people who struggle with mental health issues. However, the composition of the video and the lyrics of the song propose otherwise. There are lyrics throughout the song that points out the fact the girl they are singing about feels like no one around her notices the blatant signs that she is struggling. With that, I believe that this mentor text is actually reaching out to the audience of not only those struggling, but those around them who might now be doing anything to help them but should be. This music video shows a young girl who is battling depression but is fighting in the wrong ways. She has become addicted to drugs, nicotine, and alcohol as a form of coping with her depression, but everyone around her ignores that and just thinks it is how she is. This video is here to make a difference in the view of bystanders around people who are struggling by showing them distinct signs that the people near them need help. In addition, this video is helping those who are struggling feel less alone. This music video and the lyrics are comforting to those who are struggling with mental health issues because they express a form of community that helps people feel less alone in their battles. In addition, at the end of the video, they provide a suicide help line for those who are struggling to reach out to for help and for those who might need help taking care of the people they care about who are struggling with mental health issues.
The target audience is those who are experiencing mental health disorders, and it shows them that they are not alone. However, the target audience is also those who know people with mental health disorders, because the music video gives a visualization of signs that something could be wrong with the person they know.
The lyrics express the feelings of someone who is going through mental health issues from the perspective of someone watching over them almost like a spirit. The lyrics also talk about the feeling that no one seems to care when it is noticeable that something is wrong. This idea aids that another target audience is those who see people that are having a hard time with their mental health, but they choose to ignore the problems; it educates them to know that people feel alone when no one seems to care and this will hopefully influence them to reach out to the people they are concerned about.
